Our Methodology

How we research, test, and score software tools β€” transparently.

Why Methodology Matters

Most software review sites have a conflict of interest problem β€” they rank the tools that pay the most, not the tools that perform the best. We designed our review process to be systematic, reproducible, and resistant to commercial pressure. This page explains exactly how we work.

Step 1: Tool Selection

We select tools to review based on:

  • Market share and user adoption data
  • Search demand and user questions we see in our analytics
  • New tools with significant funding or early traction
  • Reader requests via our contact form

We do not accept payment to add or prioritize tools for review.

Step 2: Hands-On Testing

For every tool we review, we create a free trial or paid account and put it through its paces. Our testing protocol includes:

  • Completing common real-world workflows the tool is designed for
  • Testing onboarding and time-to-value for a new user
  • Evaluating the interface for clarity and intuitiveness
  • Testing integrations with popular third-party tools
  • Contacting customer support to evaluate responsiveness

Step 3: Scoring Criteria

We score each tool across five dimensions, weighted by category importance:

30%
Features & Capability
Core feature depth, reliability, and whether it delivers on its core promise.
20%
Ease of Use
Onboarding experience, UI clarity, learning curve, and documentation quality.
20%
Value for Money
Pricing fairness, tier structure, free plan availability, and cost vs. alternatives.
15%
Integrations
Native integrations, API availability, Zapier/Make support, and ecosystem fit.
15%
Support & Reliability
Support responsiveness, uptime track record, and community resources.

Scores are combined into an overall 1–10 rating displayed on each tool's review page.

Step 4: Pricing Verification

Pricing changes frequently. We verify pricing directly from each vendor's official pricing page before publishing. We note the date pricing was last verified on each review. If you notice outdated pricing, please let us know.

Step 5: Review Updates

Software evolves. We revisit and update reviews when:

  • A major product update changes feature parity or pricing
  • Our readers report significant issues with our assessment
  • A tool is acquired, rebranded, or discontinued
  • At minimum once per year for all actively recommended tools

Each review displays a β€œLast reviewed” date so you know how fresh it is.

Affiliate Relationships & Independence

We maintain affiliate partnerships with many tools we review. When you purchase through our links, we earn a commission β€” this keeps ToolPick free for readers.

Our scoring and rankings are determined before we consider affiliate relationships. We have awarded low scores and critical reviews to tools with high affiliate commissions, and we actively recommend tools that have no affiliate program when they're the best choice.
